Sony PS3 update preps 3D support, live MLB games

Sony's PS3 gaming console will soon get a firmware update which will prep the gaming console for 3D stereoscopic video playback, allow Major League Baseball's live streaming and enhance the Trophies system, the company announced yesterday. The 3.30 update will allow 3D games that should come soon. It won't bring full support for 3D movies, though that update is expected later this summer to coincide with the release of Sony's 3D BRAVIA HDTVs.

In order to watch the out-of-market baseball games streaming from the Internet, PS3 owners will need to sign up with MLB.TV. The service will have an annual subscription fee and grans users access to baseball games that don't include local team games that are broadcast on TV.

Besides these, users will get is new sorting options in the trophy system that will make it easier to share achievements with friends. Sorting will now be easier in the Trophy Collection and Comparing Trophy sections, as well as Trophy Collection in the Game Category when comparing trophies from the Friend Category. They can be displayed by game title and then by date, from newest to oldest. A Group list can also be added, and users can view trophies by date, name, grade and unique, the last of which shows trophies that their friends don't yet have.

Sony hasn't provided a fixed timetable for when 3.30 will arrive, but such announcements are usually made within just a few weeks or even days of the upgrade.
