E Ink parent company also contributing to iPad panels

updated 10:30 am EDT, Wed April 21, 2010

Prime View involved in both Kindle and iPad

The same company that makes the E Ink displays is also involved in making the iPad's screen, according to a statement made Wednesday (subscription required). Prime View International (PVI), whose E Ink division makes screens for the Kindle and Nook, said its sub-label Hydis was responsible for developing the in-plane switching (IPS) panel technology crucial to the wide viewing angles with Apple's tablet. LG Display is believed responsible for actually manufacturing the finished screen and signed a deal with PVI in December.

The connection lets PVI hedge its bets in the e-reader and tablet markets. Publicly, it has often expressed a preference for e-paper due to its reduced eye strain and advances it's making towards color and video support. Any erosion of E Ink's market by the iPad, however, would still benefit PVI by giving Hydis added business.

Apple hasn't confirmed the deals and doesn't normally divulge which companies supply its individual components. It did recently strike a $500 million deal with LG Display to produce screens across its lineup.

    shocked!

This is stunning! Usually these component companies will focus specifically on one type of product and not branch out into other areas at all, leaving all their fortunes tied up in the fate of their technology and who they can convince to use it!
