VIA releases ARTiGO A1100 DIY PC with HD playback

VIA on Tuesday released what it calls a Do-It-Yourself PC in its tiny ARTiGO A1100. It's powered by a 1.2GHz VIA Nano CPU and a VX855 media processor that handles 1080p HD video playback. Befitting its possible home theater focus, it has both HDMI and VGA output as well as optional Wi-Fi, a standard gigabit Ethernet port and five USB ports, along with an SD memory card slot.

The VX855 chipset isn't universal in its features but still supports H.264, WMV, VC-1 and MPEG 2/4 video codecs. The VIA Vinyl HD audio codec, meanwhile, has six-channel DTS audio support.

Users do need to add RAM, a hard drive, the Wi-Fi option and an operating system of their own. The system supports Windows 7, Vista and XP as well as multiple Linux distributions.

The VIA ARTiGO A1100 is now available for $243.
