Ford SYNC to add voice control for Android, BlackBerry

updated 12:00 am EDT, Tue April 20, 2010

Users can access features via voice commands

Ford has announced that it will offer SYNC AppLink on the 2011 Fiesta, allowing users to interact with Android and BlackBerry apps with voice commands and controls on the vehicle. Pandora, Stitcher "smart radio" and Orangatame's OpenBreak will be the first apps to support SYNC, while the company is also launching a developer network to help extend compatibility to additional titles.

The Android and BlackBerry endeavors mark Ford's continued expansion of SYNC capabilities with current and upcoming vehicles. Many users already have access to built-in services such as Vehicle Health Report and 911 Assist, while connected content includes traffic, directions, and other information such as weather and news.

Vehicle integration will help AppLink users comply with many local laws prohibiting use of handheld devices while driving. Microphone and steering-wheel input is communicated directly to the smartphones via Bluetooth.

SYNC support will be added to apps through regular updates available on the Android Market or BlackBerry App World. Vehicle support will extend to all SYNC-equipped vehicles next year, while the service will also be added to the iPhone platform. [via LeftLaneNews]

    iPhone conspicuously absent...

Probably due to the tighter API controls vs. android or BB.
