Olympus PEN update to speed up autofocus

updated 08:55 am EDT, Thu April 15, 2010

Olympus MFT cameras get major firmware update

Olympus set out plans on Thursday for a major firmware upgrade for all its PEN Micro Four Thirds cameras. The E-P1, E-P2 and newer E-PL1 will all get faster autofocusing in still photos, regardless of the lens. The older E-P1 and E-P2 will also get the E-PL1's faster continuous autofocusing during movie recording, but only for the long-ranged 14-140mm and wide-angle 9-18mm lenses.

Other updates are in store beyond autofocus and again depend on the camera. All three existing cameras will get a proper frame rate in Live View when using the 9-18mm lens, while the E-P1 and E-P2 will let the camera menu and recording views show on the main LCD when the VF-2 electronic viewfinder is attached. A handful of exotic flaws should also have been fixed across the line.

The updates should be posted on April 22nd and will come along with a Digital Camera Update app that will streamline updating body and lens firmware.
