Apple shipments up 34% for the quarter

Dell, HP market share slides

Apple has continued to show strong sales, with computer shipments up 34 percent for the first quarter of the year, according to report from Gartner Research. The company gained market share to reach 8 percent in the US, as the current leaders HP and Dell showed only modest increases in unit distribution and market share declines down to 25 percent and 23.4 percent, respectively.

"Although the first quarter is not typically a strong quarter for the consumer market, growth in the consumer segment was strong," said Gartner principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa. "We are expecting about 30 percent growth in the U.S. consumer PC market in the first quarter of 2010"

ASUS, Lenovo and Acer showed strength in the global market, with each company achieving shipment growth of at least 50 percent compared to the same quarter last year. The overall industry exceeded Gartner's earlier estimate of 22 percent combined gains, as early numbers indicate sales were driven up by 27.4 percent.

"These first quarter results indicate that the professional PC market is gradually picking up, driven by PC replacements in mature markets," Ms. Kitagawa said.

An IDC report showed a different trend for Apple's performance in the first quarter. Both IDC and Gartner placed the company's 1Q09 share around 7 percent, however IDC's numbers suggest Mac market share in the US declined to 6.4 percent.

    +/- 3%?

No. I'm not swearing. I'm just suggesting that both may claim plus or minus some percentage. So, in that context, I guess they could both be right. ;)

    Who's Right?

Maybe I'm missing a nuance here, but this report and the IDC one from earlier today seem to be saying entirely opposite things. That they're so different makes me wonder whether one of the two has no idea what they're talking about, or that they BOTH have no idea what they're talking about.

The next quarterly report from Apple will confirm which, I suppose.

There's nothing opposite about the reports. This is talking about Apple's own sales. The other report is talking market share. If Apple's computer sales went up 30%, but everyone else has theirs go up 50%, your sales are up, but your overall marketshare will be down.

I think you're missing the fact that IDC only estimated a US shipment growth of 8.3% versus the 34% growth estimated by Gartner. That's a significant difference and helped lead to the difference in estimated market share.

Answer: Nobody, but Gartner was close

Well, the actual results are out now, and it looks like Gartner was a lot closer than IDC. Apple only breaks their numbers down by "Americas" and a separate line for "Retail", which is heavily skewed toward the US, but from that we know that "Americas" CPU shipments were up 20% year-over-year (and to my knowledge Mac sales are rather poor in South and Central America, so that's probably representative of the US), and retail, with 2/3 the unit numbers of the Americas, is up 38%. So the real number is going to be somewhere between 20% and 38%, probably skewing closer to the 20% number because of the breakdowns.

Which means that IDC's 8% was completely wrong, while Gartner's 34% estimate was in the ballpark, but a little high.

Winner declared--I honestly wish that companies that pull obviously wrong numbers out of their posteriors in situations like this had some sort of real backlash when they were completely wrong.
