Hitachi 3D LCD could be in Nintendo 3DS

Hitachi Display has just unveiled a prototype 3D screen for mobile devices that would not require special glasses in order to display video in three dimensions. Using the same parallax barrier and IPS technology as Sharp's recently introduced 3D LCD, the Hitachi display is smaller, at 3.1 inches. It otherwise has a resolution of 480x854 resolution and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, while brightness comes in at a high 400cd/m2.

The display sends two sets of images to the left and right eye thanks to vertical slits. It can reproduce 70 percent of the typical color range. Just like Sharp's 3D prototype, the Hitachi 3D screen could be in contention in use for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS portable gaming console.

Earlier this year, Hitachi had shown a 3D screen for a smartphone for the Japanese market. [via Akihabara]
