CTL gets into tablet arena with 2go Slate

CTL plans multi-touch tablet for June

CTL launched a surprise entry into the tablet world on Thursday by showing a 2go Slate. Like HP's model, it shares some aesthetic similarities to the iPad and uses a customized version of the Windows 7 interface. The CTL version will actually be more advanced as it will use a modern, Pine Trail-era 1.66GHz Atom processor that should give it longer battery life and more performance.

Not all specs were provided in the early video, but a spokesman mentioned netbook-like specifications with a 1024x600 screen, 1GB or 2GB of RAM and a 2-megapixel camera. Expansion should also be more than usually found on a tablet with two USB ports, mini VGA output and Ethernet. A two-megapixel webcam should give it video chat, although there's no mention of the Broadcom video decoder and thus less likelihood of much HD video support.

Unlike HP, CTL plans a relatively quick turnaround from its first preview and expects to ship the 2go Slate in mid-June for $499. The company has typically catered to children and schools as a close partner with Intel on the Classmate PC line, but it's not immediately clear if the Slate will become Intel's official tablet.

    An ethernet port?

And 500 ft. of ethernet cable to roam around the house with. I'm just puzzled over this addition. I swear that these companies add hardware just to say they've got some extra feature over another product. If it doesn't add much space or weight, I suppose it's OK, but it still seems a bit strange.

It looks pretty much like the HP Slate. I see there's no mention of WiFi, Bluetooth or 3G. At least they upped the ante with a newer Atom processor. It should tack on another hour or two to battery life.
