Sprint to add 3G femtocell with VoIP landline

Provider Sprint will soon replace its femtocell with a new unit from Airvana that will finally get support for EVDO 3G networks, as revealed by an FCC filing. In addition to confirming the existence of the device itself, the documentation reveals that the new Airave femtocell will have a VoIP landline connection at the back of the unit, which no other carrier offers with their femtocells, whether they support 3G networks or not.

The currently offered Airave only supports CDMA, limiting it to helping out with voice reception indoors or in fringe coverage areas.

A release date for the new femtocell is unknown, but expected soon considering the FCC filing. It may cost the same $100 as the current product, and is also likely to carry a $5 monthly fee. When users make calls connected to the Airave, however, the time spent won't count towards plan minutes. [via Engadget]
