Mag+ tablet magazines launch on iPad first

PopSci iPad app shows off new format

Bonnier today made good on its promise to deliver the Mag+ magazine format to tablets by launching + for the iPad ($5, App Store). The app shares a common platform with a very visual but simple layout: horizontal swipes switch between articles, and the vertical is used for text within that article. Multi-touch is used for two-finger swipes through sections or to bring up a drawer for quick access to content.

In its early form, the Popular Science app doesn't support everything that was shown in early concepts, such as searches or the "heated" mode that lets readers select and share content through Facebook or Twitter. It adapts to both portrait and landscape mode and caches full issues to permit reading away from an Internet connection.

The app on launch provides access to the April issue of the magazine and handles future issues through in-app purchases that will appear at the same time as the print edition. Bonnier and its designer, BERG, also plan versions of Mag+ for other tablets but haven't said which platforms are next or how soon they might get the format.
