Red bringing EPIC 5K camera prototype to NAB show

Red founder Jim Jannard announced on the Red User forum that a working model of the long awaited and delayed EPIC camera will be displayed at the NAB show in mid April. The high-end camera, according to specs first released nearly two years ago, is expected to be capable of capturing images at near 5K resolution thanks to a full-frame sensor the same size as traditional 35mm film while still retaining the benefits of a digital sensor.

The resolution will let professional photographers shoot at the industry standard 4K and leave room for the cropping of images. Red has also promised in the past that the camera will be very upgradable, with a sensor that can be replaced to keep the camera current as formats change.

The EPIC is said to be capable of shooting at 100 frames per second and will require the company's custom flash storage and either HDMI or special, dual-link HD-SDI for video out. The Epic has the same Wi-Fi control, FireWire 800, and USB2 interfaces as the Scarlet camera, and is expected to cost around $30,000 when it finally does ship, which remains unknown but may be revealed at NAB in a few weeks. While the price seems expensive, it falls significantly below the price tag of competitors' 4K cameras.

Jannard also promises to show off accessories for the camera, but cautions the camera will either be demonstrated by Red staff or secured behind glass due to the expected large turnout.

Is that the smell of vintage Jannard vapour or the smell of the RedUser Koolaid? Perhaps it's the smell of the Epic overheating as it struggles to live up to the hype? Oh, I see it will have the same connectivity features as the Scarlett which, um, doesn't exist yet! In related news, the five man Nasa probe to Mars will have the same capabilities as their Venus probe.

or maybe it's the Smell of Jannards Cigar?

He always seems to have one...

I'm sure the NAB booth will be mobbed - and why? It's a Prototype! That means...Pre-Beta. That's the step beyond a plastic box mock up.
God knows when the real deal will actually hit the streets. I'll wait for the finished product.
Hopefully they will still have a viable product by then...although I have little doubt there's an army of "scarlet killers" waiting to rip into the market soon...

    Be Fair

In fairness to RED, they at least have managed to ship the RED One and a bunch of accessories for it, and it's apparently a very nice camera.

That said, the Scarlet sure has the air of Duke Nukem Forever--a product that keeps getting new features added and never ships as a result.

    Price ...

While the price seems expensive, it falls significantly below the price tag of competitors' 4K cameras.

Except that the competitors are actually SHIPPING functional 4K cameras ... where RED just keeps talking about it. These guys have stolen all of Microsoft's playbook. Indeed, $30,000 is very expensive for a fictional vapourware camera !!!
