Apple Store workers mostly in dark about iPad

updated 10:50 am EDT, Wed March 31, 2010

Secrecy policy could jeopardize repairs

Most Apple retail workers know just as much about the iPad as the general public, says Reuters. Speaking anonymously to the wire agency, some store staff claim that while they are encouraged to promote the iPad, none of them have seen it person yet, in keeping with their experience with other Apple products. The level of ignorance is said to extend to Geniuses however, who have allegedly not even been given instructions on how to repair an iPad.

Such a situation could prove frustrating for anyone experiencing launch-day problems with their tablet. This is said, though, to reflect Apple's policy of extreme secrecy for new products, which is imposed through internal and external measures. With the iPad Apple is claimed to be holding back custom documents, preventing UPS deliveries which would otherwise happen as soon as April 1st. The goal is simultaneous mail and retail availability, which offers several advantages for Apple, most notably diminished sales impact for any negative buzz.

Where have you been the last 9 years

News day must be slow if you have to put out a report like this. This is a non-story since Apple has been doing this for years and it's not a secret that Apple keeps employees in the dark. For the original iPhone launch employees were given a repackaged version of the same info that was already officially available to the public. Hands on training for ALL staff members didn't happen till about 5 hours before the launch. All NEW model Apple products are shipped in sealed boxes with all product information obfuscated. And management and inventory staff are not allowed to open the boxes till launch day (usually they arrive on that day anyways). And all of this is well known to anyone that keeps an eye out for Apple Retail or goes to the infamous ifoapplestore.com website.

Genius' don't have iPod/iPhone repair either

The most service they can perform is resets/software related diagnosis, anything else is usually solved with a replacement under warranty, or sending it away for user caused damage/out of warranty.

    yes

Because the best way to push your product to the masses is to make sure your store personnel are completely clueless to how it works and it's capabilities. It always is a great experience when you ask a question of an associate and, together, you get to learn the answer at the same time.

And that was as stupid as this is. The reason to keep things 'secret' is so Apple can have one of their big showcases to demo their new great next big thing. But everyone has heard about the iPad. It isn't secret. There's info on the web sites, data is known. For what possible reason does Apple have to keep all info 'secret' until reveal day? Is there some killer feature of the iPad that they don't want anyone to know about until release day? Because, if there is, then Apple would be making an announcement to show it off (to get the PR). And, if not, then it's just keeping secrets for the sake of keeping secrets (and to make your sales staff look stupid).

But, hey, at least no one knows what actual apps are on the device until 9:01am EST!

Apple hasn't released NEW Macs on the day of their announcement in a long time. Updated models are shipped this way, possibly. But Apple's been announcing NEW models a few days to months ahead of time.

    Re: Re: Where...

First off, although Apple has made great use of secrecy, I don't always agree with it either. But you have to admit that they are making a killing off of it even when it doesn't make sense to the rest of the world.

Second, my point was not to justify Apple's tactics, it was to point out how stupid the article is. It's like making a big news story out the rain to someone who already is standing out in it with raincoat on.

One thing I missed in my original comment is that Apple is not unique in holding information from employees... especially retail employees. How often do think most manufacturers send out sample products to the hundreds or thousands of stores out there. It's not practical. Apple also has to be careful (from a legal and ethical sense) about not having too much of a double standard between Apple Retail and independent vendors (like Best Buys).

Lastly, I didn't say NEW Macs, you idiot (I'm not going to pretend to be nice on this one). I said "NEW model Apple products". That includes not only Mac but also iPhones, iPods, and everything else. I worked Inventory at a Apple Store for several years I can tell you with certainty that Apple does ship new products on announcement days. Especially with iPods!
