TomTom Start 2 brings lane assist to entry GPS

TomTom intros Start 2 navigator for Europe first

TomTom hoped to take control of the low-cost GPS realm today in unveiling the Start 2. Its second-run 3.5-inch mapping device is its first in the class to get lane assist and at the same time gets text-to-speech for spoken street names. Drivers in busy areas can use IQ Routes for traffic avoidance based on historical info or else add an optional TMC adapter for live traffic updates.

As with the original Start, the Start 2 has a simplified menu and has a modular back that accepts different customizable plates; the windshield mount is partly fixed into the back of the design itself to keep it steady while driving. Europeans get the new TomTom GPS in early April and, in the UK, will cost 119 ($180) for a version with UK maps and 139 ($210) for one with Europe-wide coverage. North American releases aren't known but may put the Start 2 under the TomTom One family.
