OLPC strikes deal to use 3qi displays in XO notebooks

updated 02:15 pm EDT, Tue March 30, 2010

OLPC partners with Pixel Qi on XO displays

The One Laptop per Child Foundation (OLPC) on Tuesday announced that it has partnered with Pixel Qi to deliver notebooks meant for children with the latter's low-power displays. The permanent and royalty-free cross-licensing agreement will grant the OLPC Pixel Qi's 3qi screen technology including more than 70 patents. Pixel Qi, in return, will get a full license to the dual-mode indoor and outdoor display technology used in the XO notebook.

The integration of Pixel Qi screens into XO notebooks is expected to extend the battery life of the notebooks. This is a key concern for the developing worlds the XO is aimed at, with electricity to recharge the computers often coming at a premium.

The two companies have history, as Pixel Qi was founded by Mary-Lou Jepsen, a key display designer behind the One Laptop Per Child project.
