Dell Aero may lack Google Maps, other Android apps

updated 07:10 pm EDT, Mon March 29, 2010

Android OS paired with AT&T feature phone UI

Dell's upcoming Aero handset allegedly lacks Google Maps, Gmail, and other basic Android apps, according to an Engadget report. The omissions appear to be related to AT&T's customized UI, which integrates redesigned elements ranging from the home screen to keyboard.

Although the pre-release handset was also missing Google Market, an AT&T representative was said to have confirmed that the Android app portal will be available on the final version.

While the Android OS is open source and available for free, Google's apps are closed source and can only be distributed after licensing agreements have been established. It remains unclear if the full set of Android apps will be present on the Aero when it ships to customers.

It's one thing that AT&T knows well

It's how to design UI's for cell phones. They know what their customers need and want, and know how to provide it.
