HP ups 17-inch mobile flagship with 2010 tech

HP this morning overhauled its most powerful EliteBook to take advantage of new leaps in technology. The 8740w packs Core i5 and i7 processors, up to the quad-core 1.73GHz Core i7. Reinforcing the speed image are a pair of USB 3.0 ports for fast external drives and much more powerful graphics that include either a Quadro FX 2800M, Quadro FX 3800M or FirePro M7820.

The mobile workstation starts with a 1440x900 display but can scale up to HP's signature 1920x1200 DreamColor screen, which provides desktop-like color accuracy for image editing. It can handle up to 16GB of RAM in quad-core variants and always has the option of a Blu-ray drive as well as EVDO- or HSPA-based 3G.

HP delivers the EliteBook 8740w worldwide in April and starts the base pricing at $1,999, although it hasn't said what processors, although a base system should have a 250GB hard drive, a DVD drive and a Core i5.
