Nintendo 3DS to provide 3D games without glasses

Nintendo surprises with new handheld plans

Nintendo surprised gamers on Tuesday by revealing plans for a new handheld. Currenly nicknamed the 3DS, the portable would not only provide 3D visuals but do so without needing glasses. The console maker characterizes it as a successor to the DS and not another complementary model, as with the DSi or DSi XL.

More details are promised by E3 in mid-June, with a release sometime during Nintendo's fiscal year, which ends in March 2011.

The new system is an aggressive move by Nintendo, which while still enjoying some of the strongest console sales of any kind with the DS has lost share to the iPod. Apple's newer hardware and cheaper games have led some to pay the premium for its devices; a handheld capable of 3D visual effects would give Nintendo a unique experience.

It's not clear if this is the same device mentioned in previous rumors, which would bring seamless screens and a Tegra 250. However, 3D effects are more likely to require faster graphics hardware and processing power.
