T-Mobile HSPA+ plans bring Dell Mini 10, 100 cities

updated 04:05 pm EDT, Tue March 23, 2010

Dell netbook and wide area to get 21Mbps 3G

T-Mobile bolstered its webConnect data access with the first-ever HSPA+ netbook and details of its coverage. A new variant of the Dell Mini 10 will come with built-in HSPA+ and should reach up to 21Mbps in any area where the faster speeds are active, including New York City, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Washington, DC's suburbs. The 10-inch system still has the 1.66GHz Atom, Windows 7 and six-cell battery of the original, but it will be subsidized down to $200 on a two-year data plan when it ships tomorrow.

Accompanying the T-Mobile launch is word that the provider plans to expand its network significantly. It expects the faster services to expand from its small footprint to over 100 cities by the end of the year. Service will be limited to modems and netbooks until the first phones arrive in the second half of the year, but it should render T-Mobile's network the fastest GSM network in the US.

AT&T has hinted it may use selective HSPA+ deployments in the near future, but it has previously said that its main network would leap directly from 7.2Mbps 3G to 4G in 2011.
