Pogoplug adds media streaming, remote backup

updated 01:00 pm EDT, Tue March 16, 2010

Pogoplug now shares videos to consoles

Pogoplug today launched a pair of upgrades for its eponymous network drive sharing device. The adapter can now stream movies, music and photos over the network, initially to a PS3 or Xbox 360. Both automatically recognize the presence of any Pogoplugs on the local network and will recognize any format they already understand.

The built-in backup feature, Active Copy, has also been improved and supports automatically copying files to a Pogoplug outside of the local network. Owners can now use a second Pogoplug as a backup even if it's in a different area entirely.

Either feature should be active today as the company is automatically pushing the upgrade to all Internet-connected Pogoplugs. Hardware remains the same $129 device and shares as many as four USB drives with access through either game consoles or desktop and smartphone web browsers.

    Blah!

Why would I pay $129, when I can buy Playback; a $15 media server that will blow this thing away!
