Nexus One gets AT&T, Canadian support

Google Nexus One gets official 850MHz 3G

Google today officially updated the Nexus One to support the 850MHz 3G band. The new version puts the range-topping Android device on AT&T's 3G for the first time and also supports use on Bell, Rogers and Telus in Canada. Appropriately, Google now says it's shipping the Nexus One to Canada for the first time and is also selling the original model with 1,700MHz 3G, which should support Wind Mobile.

The frequency change doesn't affect the main device we reviewed earlier, which centers on a 3.7-inch, 854x480 AMOLED touchscreen and otherwise brandishes a 5-megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi and a microSDHC slot preloaded with a 4GB card.

AT&T and Canadian users are currently limited to the unlocked model, which still carries a $529 US ($538 CAD) price but isn't attached to any network and can use SIMs from other networks.

The launch comes at an ironic moment for Google, as the Nexus One's manufacturer HTC has been sued by Apple for allegedly copying iPhone technologies, including multi-touch input. The device isn't the first Android device readied for AT&T's network but is the first flagship-class model sold in the same country.
