Apple begins taking iPad pre-orders

updated 08:30 am EST, Fri March 12, 2010

US customers get first shot at buying iPad

As promised, iPad pre-orders have begun at the Apple Store. The campaign lets US customers pre-order the Wi-Fi and 3G versions of the tablet for online shipments. It also lets customers reserve a unit at a retail store in the country.

The pre-orders also include most of Apple's official iPad accessories, including the Keyboard Dock ($69), Case ($39), regular Dock ($29), 10W USB Power Adapter ($29) and VGA Adapter ($29). The camera and SD card adapters, however, appear to be absent.

International orders aren't expected to be ready until late April, when Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK will get the device as well. Both these and US customers will have the option of the more expensive 3G model at the same time. Other countries are expected to follow later on in the year.

    Just Pre-Ordered Mine! - Delivers 4/3

From the previous thread there was a question about deliveries on Saturday.

The pre-order promised delivery on 4/3 and NO, I did not have to pick (or pay for) any shipping beyond the free shipping included.

    My 3G version is ordered!

    Very exciting!

As a side note, Apple lets you also order their standard Bluetooth keyboard with it, so I suspect that any Bluetooth keyboard should work OK!

    Just Ordered 2 :-)

Like running your fingers down the Elevator's Buttons for every floor! I placed an Order for everything with all the options and parts for 2 of them, Including the 2 Year AppleCare at $99.00, Kinda upset its not a 3 Year AppleCare. I did pick the 2-3 Day Shipping option as for the other items marked as delivery Mid April. Now I need to get to work so not to loose my job for being late this morning.

Good Luck everyone with your purchase.

    Canada

Funny that they don't even have a price announced for Canada yet.

Also funny that the top model is over $800. Never seen a computer line before where the price ranged from $499 to $829 for hard an extra 48 gigs and a 3g network connection... additional parts that only costs $115 all together. What a markup!

$499 no options all the way :)

I logged in at 8:29am 50 seconds, est, and I fumbled around and didn't complete my order for 3 crucial minutes!!!

That's a good lesson for everyone, test your game plan by ordering something else the night before.

I had to update my CC info and didn't even remember my Apple Login ID, I know, no excuse for that.

I ordered the basic, naturally - thats the best bang for the buck. Paid my sky-high local sales tax...now Apple, get that baby to my doorstep, its all in your hands now.

    Memory

I'm about to place my order.

What memory config are you all getting? The lower price points are attractive, but is 16G enough? Should I be reaching for the 64GB?

    SD Card slot

I have the same question. I think the SD card slot will work for having additional things like movies and music...I was thinking 16gb...but I'm waffling...

I don't know if I can justify 64gb for the first gen model. I know I'll be buying gen 2 as well. ;)

    re: Memory

Depends on what you plan on doing... if it is around the house use, there are many apps out there that can mean you don't need media directly loaded on the iPad. Just ran across "Air Video" for the iPod Touch/iPhone 2 days ago, server runs on your Mac (or windows PC), point it to a folder of video, and it can do pre-converting of files, or live conversion (if your mac is fast enough) to stream the video over your Local network to your iPhone/iPod Touch. (it can work over the internet as well, but requires additional configuration for most people)

Was pretty impressed at how smoothly it worked for only $3, and now there is one less thing I need to sync my iPhone up for.

    SD Card

The problem with SD Cards is that you are limited to 4 or 8GB max. (I think).
But that is a nice idea. I might go with the 32GB. You are right, the 64 is hard to justify. I'll be getting two of them as well. (One for wife, and one for I.)
