Poser Pro 2010 adds new tools, effects

updated 09:50 am EST, Thu March 11, 2010

Extensions support plugins, image uploads

Smith Micro has released Poser Pro 2010, an updated version of its 3D modeling suite. The program is particularly focused on character design, and includes modules for designing faces, hair and clothes. To this end Pro 2010 includes several new tools, such as Cross-Body Part Morph, which generates details such as scales, veins, wounds, horns and muscle bulges. A Dependent Parameter tool creates master parameters for a scene, affecting elements like body morphs and scene assets.

Other new tools include tone-mapping and exposure controls, the ability to export data as PSD layers for Photoshop or After Effects, and a new content management system which makes it easier to find local and Content Paradise material. A Wardrobe Wizard lets users reuse clothing with the Poser 8 character set, and hooks have been put in place for direct Facebook and StuffIt Connect uploads. Smith Micro has also upgraded the rigging system, and reorganized tool layout, adding extra customization options.

Some new effects involve normal-mapped surfaces, indirect lighting, and "physically correct" light falloff. Third-party developers can now write plugins using wxPython, and the software has been given 1GB of additional prefab content for a total of 2.5GB. This includes eight new template humans, representing different races and body types.

Poser Pro 2010 is $500 new, $250 as an upgrade from Poser 6, 7 or 8, and $200 when coming from the previous Pro version. Until March 31st people who own both Poser 8 and Poser Pro will be able to upgrade to Pro 2010 for $50; the price will jump to $70 thereafter. Macs require Mac OS X 10.4, 1GB of RAM and 2GB or more of free hard drive space.

    Another Great Release

Poser has always made it so much simpler to create artwork and animation based on human or living forms - it just keeps getting better and better. It also integrates with Mirye Software Shade - http://www.mirye.net and e-on software Vue http://www.e-onsoftware.com using PoserFusion, a fantastic hosting technology.

Ten years of solely mesh-based posing

I'd like to get excited about this, but realistically computing power has largely outpaced what Poser can do (bending/morphing a mesh with no bones or other structures). In 1999 it was reasonable for the average computer owner to pick Poser over a pro modeling/animation package, but those packages' requirements have gotten closer to the average desktop/laptop configuration since then. It's also sobering to consider the amount of work and postwork you have to put into a render to make it anything other than an immediately recognizable Poser render.
