Pentax 645D slated for May with 40 megapixel sensor

updated 11:50 pm EST, Tue March 9, 2010

Company releases full specs

Following several teasers, Pentax has finally announced availability information and detailed specs for its upcoming 645D medium-format camera. The DSLR integrates a 40 megapixel sensor manufactured by Kodak, along with a SAFOX IX+ autofocus system providing 11 sensor points. Like many other Pentax cameras, the 645D features a semi-rugged body with 70 seals for resistance to dust, water and low temperatures.

Internally, the new camera features the company's Real Image Engine, Dust Removal II system, glass prism viewfinder and 14-bit A/D converter. Users will be able to load two separate card slots, both holding a single SD/SDHC memory card.

Pentax will launch its D-FA 645 55mm F2.8 AL lens alongside the camera body. The lens is equivalent to 43.5mm in the 35 format, while providing weatherproof protection similar to the body. The design is Pentax's first to feature a completely rounded diaphragm. [via Photography Blog]

The 645D is due to ship sometime in May, with expected prices of 850,000 (~$9,500 USD) for the body and 100,000 (~$1,100) for the lens. It is unclear when the camera will be coming to the North American market, as initial availability will be limited to Japan.

    Not full frame?

What a disappointment it's not full-frame. A full-frame 40MP 645 would be the one to beat Hassy at one fifth the price with a great lens selection. The fact that it's a reduced size sensor decreases the value of the lens lineup considerably, unless you always shoot long.

    It's not a 6x4.5cm sensor

The sensor is roughly 70% of 645 size. Does that mean the sensor is closer to the lens, to make it full frame? In that case, isn't the focal distance affected?

I read the specs again. It's not FF

This camera is not full frame 645. Vasu is simply wrong.

There is no problem with this in terms of specification. The problem lies in terms of the existing lens catalog. Every 645 lens will be longer.

Medium Format is BIGER than Full Frame!!

The Pentax 645D is a Medium Format camera (44mm x 33mm sensor). It has a LARGER sensor than a Full Frame camera (35mm x 24mm sensor).

No MF digital camera has a sensor the full 645 (or 6x6, or 6x7). The Kodak sensors in their various MP ratings are the ones in most MF cameras and digital backs. Yes, Pentax will release some new lenses, but they already have shorter focal lengths that will be fine for the new digital.

Are you missing the biggest news here? Look at the price! Under $10k for a MF body is a steal. People have been waiting for years for a Pentax MF. The film 645 was a slick little piece but without the removable back that would have made it adaptable to digital.
