Pixel Qi to sell DIY screens beofre spring's end

Pixel Qi said over the weekend that its unique 3qi displays will be available as stand-alones, for users to install on their own into any devices they see fit, by the end of spring. An official announcement will be made before the displays actually ship, and no prices or sizes of the screens have been announced.

The Pixel Qi displays are unlike any others in the industry as they can act like a traditional LCD screen as well as an e-paper display. When backlit, they have the characteristics of regular LCD displays; with the backlight off, their highly reflective nature lets them behave like an e-paper display, with all the associated energy savings. The speed lets them play back video in e-paper mode, however. The screens also support multi-touch input.

Thus far, the only known OEM device to use a Pixel Qi display is the Notion Ink Adam tablet and though other customers are expected, they are thus far unnamed.
