Nokia unveils Nuron for T-Mobile, Skype for Symbian

Nokia Nuron a basic touch smartphone for US

Nokia today formally rolled out the 5230 Nuron as one of its first smartphones for T-Mobile's US branch. The direct conversion of the European phone gives the carrier one of the least expensive 3G, touchscreen smartphones available: it has just a 2-megapixel camera and no Wi-Fi but still has Symbian S60, a 640x360 display and built-in GPS. It also becomes the first Nokia phone anywhere to ship with free Ovi Maps and the Ovi Store portal already installed.

The company is shy on release dates and promises only that the Nuron will ship in coming weeks. However, the smartphone should cost just $70 on contract after factoring in a $50 rebate, making it one of the least expensive smartphone-class devices on the network.

Simultaneously, Nokia has also teamed up to help launch Skype for Symbian. The app gives the full feature set of competitors and can make VoIP calls over 3G or Wi-Fi. It likewise handles SkypeOut calls and text messages to real-world numbers as well as free chats and file sharing between fellow Skype users. The download is free through the Ovi Store and includes optimized touch input for the N97 series, X6, 5800 XpressMusic and 5530 as well as several more popular non-touch phones like the E71, N95 and N85.
