Dell Latitude 13 goes up for orders, costs $559

updated 12:50 pm EST, Tue March 2, 2010

Dell's CULV Latitude starts at low price

As it promised last month, Dell today started taking orders for the Latitude 13. The 0.65-inch thick CULV system is now known to be an inexpensive buy and at $559 starts out with a 1.3GHz Celeron M, Ubuntu Linux, 1GB of RAM and 802.11g Wi-Fi. Every version comes with a six-cell battery, although Dell hasn't said how long the battery should last.

A second ready-made spec at $589 adds the unusual pick of Windows Vista Home Basic without changing any other features, while a third jumps to a much higher $883 to add Windows 7 Professional, a 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo, 2GB of RAM and 802.11n wireless. Custom ordering can bring the Latitude up to a 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM, and either a 320GB hard drive or a 64GB SSD.

The system has other typical business options like a Gobi modem for 3G as well as Bluetooth and a webcam. Dell expects orders placed today to start shipping by about March 23rd.
