Averatec claims lightest 10-inch netbook

updated 11:25 am EST, Tue March 2, 2010

Averatec N1200 weighs just 2.2lbs

TriGem's label Averatec today staked out a rare claim in the netbook field with the N1200. The 10-inch netbook is pitched as the current lightest and thinnest netbook of its size and weighs just 2.2 pounds while also measuring 0.9 inches thick. Averatec claims the feat is achieved by using technologies that don't normally find their way into netbooks, such as 7mm hard drives and more efficiently-shaped lithium-polymer batteries.

The chief sacrifice is battery life, as the weight requirements cap the notebooks at three hours on a standard battery and six with an extended pack.

Three main trim levels are available. All three run on a 1.66GHz Atom and carry 1GB of RAM, a 1.3-megapixel webcam and 802.11n Wi-Fi. A base model at $330 uses Windows XP on a 160GB hard drive; spending slightly more at $350 switches to Windows 7 Starter, while a $380 model builds in the extended battery and a larger 250GB hard drive.

The N1200 should be available this month bothh online and in shops.
