Mio enters tablet arena with Moov V780

updated 07:35 am EST, Mon March 1, 2010

Mio V780 borders on GPS, MID, tablet arenas

Mio today helped kick off CeBIT by launching an unusual crossover device. The Moov V780 offers the customary GPS navigation but carries a 7-inch, 800x480 display that turns it into a media tablet. It touts a web browser with Flash support as well as Exchange-capable e-mail, multi-touch capable music and photo browsers, and a dedicated YouTube client. A relatively fast 600MHz processor and graphics give it enough power to decode 720p video at native resolution through an HDMI output.

Its role as a computing device goes so far as to include a special case that doubles as a keyboard dock for extended use.

The tablet also brings either 4GB or 8GB of built-in storage as well as a microSDHC card slot and a digital TV tuner that picks up a number of regional TV standards, including DVB-T for Europe as well as Japan's 1Seg and Korea's T-DMB. Networking comes over the obligatory 802.11g Wi-Fi but also options of 3G or WiMAX.

Mio hasn't said when it will release the V780, given it a price or said where it will ship. Some of its devices reach the US, but without confirmation of ATSC support a release in the area is uncertain. It faces an uphill struggle in North America as the launch of the iPad is likely to hurt Mio's chances.
