iTunes prize winner takes Steve Jobs' call as a prank

updated 04:45 pm EST, Fri February 26, 2010

Winner unaware of contest

The winner of Apple's recent iTunes contest, Louie Sulcer, initially dismissed Steve Jobs' personal phone call as a prank, according to Rolling Stone. Sulcer claims to have purchased the 10 billionth iTunes track, Johnny Cash's "Guess Things Happen That Way," while unaware that Apple was running such a promotion.

After the CEO introduced himself as Steve Jobs from Apple, Sulcer said "yeah right, who is this really?" The Woodstock, Georgia resident believed the call may have been placed by his son as a joke. "He does that every now and then — calls me and imitates somebody.” After asking jobs "come on now, who is this" several more times, Sulcer finally gained confirmation after checking his caller ID.

The grandfather of nine reportedly chose the song after listening to a 30-second preview which "had some really good pickin' in it." He admits that it might be time to upgrade from his current iPod nano to a model with additional storage.

    How ironic...

Because when Steve calls me, he pretends to be someone else almost every time...

    Well...

Can you blame him? Would anyone here believe it if anybody like Steve Jobs called them? I am sure I wouldn't.

    Steve Case called me once...

    But that's a different story.

    I can totally understand...

I have struggled about whether or not to share this story for quite awhile. But after reading this I feel compelled to validate this man experience.
About 2 years ago I was battling cancer in Johns Hopkins and some coworkers of mine thought it might boost my spirits if they wrote Apple to see if Steve might give me a call to boost my spirits. Well on my second day out of surgery I got a call on my newly purchased iPhone. And like our friend here, I did not believe it was Mr. Jobs. In fact I think I questioned his integrity more than once, but I finally decided that the voice was so genuine and the throat clearing was too familiar. We had a nice talk sharing some of our illness stories and at that time I think he believed he had won his battle decisively. He was very sincere and I really enjoyed his call. What I remember, I was still a bit groggy.
It was true friends that took the time to write the letter and arrange this for me and I am sure the situation was unique enough to catch someones eye and pass this up the chain to Mr. Jobs. I do not think there are many folks in his position that would take the time in their day just to say "Hi" to a total stranger and fan of their companies stuff. But this man does.
If anyone that knows Mr Jobs reads this, please tell him I said "Thank You, I really needed that call" and I wish him strength in his struggle.

    A Friend,
    Tony
