Apple acknowledges yellowed iMac displays

updated 02:20 pm EST, Fri February 26, 2010

Issues claimed to be resolved

Apple has finally acknowledged reports of yellow tint and flickering on 27-inch iMac displays. Customers have been lodging complaints since the systems first began shipping, although Apple had denied the issues for several months. Supply hiccups, ranging from a few days to several weeks, were believed to be related to a production halt while the company addressed the LCD problems.

An Apple spokesperson flatly denied suggestions that the shipping delays were related to quality control, instead claiming customer demand simply outpaced the production capacity.

"We've addressed the issues that caused display flickering and yellow tint," Apple told Gizmodo. in a short statement. "Customers concerned that their iMac is affected should contact AppleCare."

    Apple gets so much right...

why can't they better communicate with their customers and the press when they get something wrong? It seems like it takes months of complaints and widespread outrage before Apple will admit there is a known issue with a product. I remember two other instances - faulty RAM connects on the PowerBook G4 and power supplies in the Power Mac G4 where failures were widespread (I got new motherboard replacements in both instances). But both machines had been appropriately registered and Apple could have emailed me to alert me of a potential issue and/or provided a contact number -- but they didn't. Maybe it is unreasonable to expect them to be that proactive, but I've always had high expectations of Apple. They are selling a luxury class of computing equipment and its reasonable for its customers to expect more from them.

    The end of reliability!

Three Apple laptops - three design flaws! I've had 3 Apple laptops since 2003 all of which have exhibited problems. By comparison, I've had seven desktop machines since 1998 that have all performed flawlessly. There seems to be a big problem with the reliability of portables! I'm not sure if I will even buy another laptop when (note that I say when rather than if) this one dies.

    They acknowledge the Urine iMacs...

I guess the flaw was on quite a number of iMacs after all. The only upside to this is that refurbed models should be in plentiful supply.

    The MacBook set the tone

The MacBook was the first massive fraud against the consumers. 'Oh, we have not heard of such splinters on the palmrest.' 'The hard drive failure rate has not been remarkably higher than other portables.'

Apple would only take action when it becomes unbearable for them to handle. The MacBook was flawed before it was even produced; it was destined to crack into pieces. The rubber rails inside were designed to melt away from the frame, so you have to let the computer 'cool off' for 30 minutes before you remove the hard drive. Were these flaws changed? Absolutely not. It was finally licked as the unibody hit the market on 10/20/2009.

The 'just say no' approach was really lame. Consumers need to take them to task.

    they never denied the problem

they didn't validate it as a widespread and major design flaw. because it likely was not. despite the very vocal folks on places like this, gizmodo etc, the percent of machines shipped with any issues was probably small.

if Apple had announced the issue it would have caused a huge panic with folks returning machines that were actually fine and so on. But if you walked into an Apple store with a damaged machine they certainly didn't tell you that you were crazy and send you home. they might require you to go to the Bar first, but that allows them to test the machine and have results to send to their people with which they can fix any problems. And get details about where it was bought, was it a customized order etc. to narrow down contributing factors

i myself have had close to 100 27 inch computers pass through my hands since the release. about a fifth were custom orders and the rest were store bought. 60/40 split on dual v quad. out of those perhaps 3 had any kind of issue and all 3 were replaced with undamaged machines in round two. and these were bought through the time period, not all just in the last couple of weeks.

And I know a lot of folks that got 27 inch computers with no issues ever. And these are graphics and video folks so they run their machines hard.

    Strange...

Strange that the claims of the purveyors of FUD (davidfoster,Feathers,Paul Huang) are not born out by professional third party surveys which show Apple at the very top of reliability and customer service lists. The disconnect between the FUDsters and reality is so stark that something must be afoot. If one must choose between the rantings of individuals of unknown competence and motives, and every single third party industry survey and poll that shows the complete opposite, then the rational choice would be the latter.

This thread is confirmation of my decision to ignore user reviews and comments when making a purchase decision for anything. There is no credibility in individual comments, period.

    And..

Every Mac blog in the known universe is regurgitating the uncorroborated and unsubstantiated claim of Gizmodo that Apple has officially acknowledged the issue. NO ONE else has reported receiving a statement from Apple. No other site has confirmed the report. There has been no press release. The Apple spokesperson has not been identified. We only have Gizmodo's word for it. Nothing else, period, has been released. Yet Gizmodo's claim has been reprinted over and over again as undisputed fact.

    Why is that?
