Associated Press plans iPad app, paid service

updated 04:45 pm EST, Fri February 26, 2010

Intro coincides with launch of AP Gateway

The Associated Press has announced plans for the iPad, which entail a custom application attached to a paid subscription service. Although the newswire agency already syndicates most of its content, the iPad app will also include content from over 1,000 newspapers and broadcasters, in keeping with the company's current cellphone efforts. No prices or release dates have been mentioned.

The app is tied to the creation of AP Gateway, a new business division. The group will be dedicated to "news consumer experiences," with a particular emphasis on tablets, phones and e-readers. Participation is open to other news publishers, most likely meaning those the AP is presently involved with. If it gains traction, the app could potentially serve as one of the main news portals on the iPad.
