Boxee restores beta support on Apple TV

updated 01:25 pm EST, Thu February 25, 2010

USB tool provides key

The latest version of the Boxee beta, v0.9.20.10708, should now install normally on the Apple TV, its developer says. While it was possible to put the update on Apple's set-top prior to today, the process involved SSH, making it impractical for a casual user. The situation has changed thanks to a "resurrected" atvusb-creator tool.

Installation still involves a series of steps, but mainly using atvusb to create a USB patchstick bootable on an Apple TV. Upgrading users are still urged to perform clean installs by deleting their Boxee UserData folder. On an Apple TV, this can be found within the Library/Application Support/BOXEE/ directory.

Boxee is a media browsing interface with greater format support, including the ability to stream web video beyond that from YouTube. Clients are also available for Mac, Windows and Ubuntu Linux. A Boxee Box should be available sometime this spring.
