AT&T extends 3G MicroCell coverage into new markets

updated 08:15 pm EST, Thu February 25, 2010

Device increases signal strength in the home

AT&T has extended availability for its 3G MicroCell router beyond the initial pilot cities. Customers can now sign up from additional locations in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, San Diego and Las Vegas. The device creates a local 3G hotspot, using an in-home broadband connection to connect back to the phone network.

The service provides unlimited calling from their MicroCell network, while allowing Internet-enabled devices to connect using a strong 3G signal when Wi-Fi is not an option.

Pricing for the MicroCell is expected to vary depending on the subscriber's existing plan, although AT&T has yet to finalize its cost structure. In certain areas participating in the pilot program, customers with AT&T Internet or landline telephone service paid $10 per month. Subscribers limited to an AT&T cellphone plan are believed to have paid $20 each month. Specific availability information is provided on AT&T's website.

    Do I understand this correctly?

I can pay between $10 and $20 per month to AT&T to build out their network for them! Why are they not paying me to use my broadband?

Just wondering what I've missed here.

    AMEN ALEN

I was just thinking the same thing? Why am I paying for extending AT&T's crappy network?

    Nail on the head Alen

Dear ATT customer, our sub par over priced service is just that, but if you'd like to improve it using broadband connections you pay another provider for we would love to have the chance to gouge you some more. Many thanks, ATT.

    AT&T rage

When I use AT&T, each call is a dropped call. Why? When the going gets rough, I hang up on people. It's such a waste of time talking over a tsunami. If I had an AK47 when I use AT&T, I would have sprayed each phone for 60 seconds.

    Yes, you SORT of understand

But perhaps you missed that can always use another provider (and phone?).
