updated 04:20 pm EST, Wed February 24, 2010

Sprint to bring WiMAX to NYC, SF, later this year

Sprint on Wednesday announced plans for releasing its high-speed mobile broadband WiMAX network in new cities in 2010. Newly added are Denver, Kansas City and Minneapolis, in addition to the already announced plans for launches in New York, San Francisco, Washington (DC,) Boston and Houston later this year. These new markets will join the 27 cities Sprint already currently covers with the 4G network.

WiMAX theoretically allows peak 12Mbps download speeds, though real-world testing from Sprint reveals transfers in the 2-4Mbps range. The carrier says the performance is twice as fast as practical 3G speeds.

Sprint hopes to have as many as 120 million customers using its 4G service by the end of this year. Pricing for a 4G plan in the covered cities begins at $60. Despite the announcement, Sprint has not revealed exactly when it will launch the WiMAX network in the new markets.
