Apple pulls Explicit option from App Store

updated 09:55 pm EST, Wed February 24, 2010

Option only appeared for a short time

The new "Explicit" option that had been available for App Store developers has already been pulled, just hours after Apple added the new category. The company briefly posted the new option in iTunes Connect, the software used to submit and manage apps for the iPhone and iPod touch.

The temporary addition ignited speculation that Apple may have been modifying the App Store to include a specific category for apps aimed at a mature audience. The company has been in the process of removing any "overtly sexual" content from its app inventory, however, allegedly following complaints from offended individuals.

Apple reportedly confirmed the removal to one developer, according to Gizmodo. The representative is claimed to have said the company is considering it, but "it's not going to happen anytime soon."

First remove erotic apps, causes a storm and bad press, then add explicit category.. everybody happy and good press.. then quietly remove category..

    Sounds like...

it may have been a case of premature withdrawal.

    No...

They added the category to appease both developer and the 'public' (not actually the public, but the 65 people who never have anything better to do than complain because some singer sort of exposed a breast, or someone used a bad word on a tv show, or that type of rot). Unfortunately, the 'public' probably went ballistic again, claiming just allowing naughty content was too much, and it offended their puritan ways. So, amidst another firestorm, Apple pulled it.

And yet, all those farting apps still abound...
