updated 09:50 am EST, Tue February 23, 2010

Lineup includes desktop and laptop cards, cables

Belkin has expanded its product lineup with several peripherals that support the new USB 3.0 standard. Two are expansion cards, the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 PCIe Add-In Card for desktops, and the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ExpressCard adapter for laptops. Belkin has also unveiled two USB 3.0-compliant cables, the SuperSpeed A-B Cable and the SuperSpeed Premium Micro-B Cable.

Belkin's tests showed their USB 3.0 products deliver transfer speeds up to three times as fast as USB 2.0. Theoretical performance of USB 3.0 is five gigabytes per second, or ten times the rate of USB 2.0.

Retail prices were also announced. The desktop and laptop cards will retail for $80. Four foot cables will sell for $40 each, and eight foot cables will be $50. The new products will be available in April 2010 in the US, and May 2010 in Canada.

    So...

With all these Multiples of speed increases, are the connection standards still the bottlenecks in storage? Can drive mechanisms saturate this level of bandwith? I want to know if its worth the upgrade yet.
