Motorola to link phones, set-top boxes

updated 06:00 pm EST, Thu February 18, 2010

Motoblur 'likely' on TV boxes in late 2010

In a move that signals greater cohesion between its cellphone and home-products divisions, Motorola has said that it would bring e-mail and social networking functions to television set-top boxes. The MOTOBLUR interface, which ties together social networks, emails and news, is now being tested on set-top devices. Motoblur-enabled set-top boxes will likely ship in late 2010 or early 2011. Motoblur made its debut on the Cliq late last year but has since spread to phones like the Backflip and MOTOROI.

Motorola announced last week that it would split into two companies by 2011. Sanjay Jha, who has been tapped to head the new streamlined Motorola, wants a common platform for set-top boxes and cellphones so that the two divisions can share more innovations. [via WSJ]
