CBS set to reduce prices for certain shows on iTunes

updated 07:40 pm EST, Thu February 18, 2010

Company still working out details

CBS is reportedly set to reduce prices for certain TV shows purchased through iTunes, according to The Wall Street Journal. CEO Les Moonves suggests the company will mark down some of its content from $1.99 down to 99 cents, although he did not provide details regarding which shows would be reduced or a time-frame for any plans.

“There are certain shows that will be sold on Apple for 99 cents,” Moonves said.

Apple is believed to be pressuring TV networks to lower episode pricing, in an attempt to strengthen video sales through iTunes. The push is also said to be related to the iPad, as the device features a larger screen that could be considered more suitable for watching video than the smaller display on the iPhone.

    my guess

99 cents is the SD version. with $1.99 being the HD version. which is fine by me since I was never totally bugged by the $2 price.

now if they would do a lower season pass (say $30 for a 22 episode season), drop perhaps 50 cents an episode if the show is only '30 minutes' long, encourage networks to put the eps up right away and not the same time as the DVD sets (or after) and even get some special features for pass holders (a la the LP and Extras gigs). plus more older shows, especially ones that never went to DVD.

and if they added the rumors subscription service. I'd pay $30 (SD) or even $40 a month(HD) for all you can watch viewing. preferrably with expiring files (that you can always download again if you want) rather than streaming so I can watch off line. that would rock

    sweet

Great, now they just need to drop DRM, and then I'll buy. Otherwise, I'll stick to ripping my DVDs for about the same price, and a lot more flexibility.

    Too bad it's CBS

I wouldn't watch a CBS show if you paid me. The only thing I watch on CBS is the NCAA tournament, and I pray the NCAA exercises it's out clause this year.

    commercials?

While I still watch TV on the TV, could someone comment regarding if you pay for a TV episode, is it commercial free?

Sorry but even at .99 I'm not paying to watch commercials. Commercial free and I would be more then happy to pay.
