Sony Ericsson hints at PSP phone during MWC

Mobile company to collaborate with gaming division

Sony Ericsson has hinted at a possibility of producing a PSP phone, according to an interview with president Bert Nordberg in the Monday issue of the Mobile World Congress Show Daily. The company also introduced several new Android-based devices early this week, including the Xperia X10 mini and mini pro variants, along with the Symbian-powered Vivaz pro.

"We missed the window for high-end and touchscreen devices big time," Nordberg admitted. "Part of the recovery will be much better design and closer work with our partner Sony... In the past there was no tie-up between us, the PSP platform and Sony, but you can expect to hear much more about that."

The executive suggested Sony Ericsson will also engage the home environment with upcoming products. "The TV, PC, stereo, and mobile will have a common communications interface -- DLNA," he said.

A recent report suggests the iPhone has become a more popular platform to develop games for than the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. Sales of Sony's portable gaming device are said to be slower than expected, allegedly driving the company to launch a second marketing campaign.

Sony has yet to disclose further details regarding a concept for a PSP handset.
