Samsung Wave gets last-minute reveal

Samsung's first phone based on its Bada platform, the Wave, has been leaked early and reveals some of the company's plan for its first entirely self-developed mix of smartphone hardware and software. The full-touchscreen device itself is now known to be a very high-end handset with a 1GHz processor, a 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording, 2GB of internal storage (plus microSDHC) and 802.11n Wi-Fi. Its centerpiece will be the first use of Samsung's 3.3-inch Super AMOLED screen, which will not only be more vivid but tackle AMOLED's chronic problem with visibility outdoors.

The Bada platform in turn appears to draw partly on an iPhone- or Android-like multiple home screen layout but with some more distinctive interface changes. Calling, contacts and and app menu launcher will always be accessible on the home screen; TouchWiz 3.0 should also be present and will provide widgets for the time and other quick-access features. The company has already confirmed the use of multi-touch.

Samsung is set to formally unveil the Wave at a Sunday keynote and could ship the finished product by March or April.

Bada is known to be Samsung's attempt at following an iPhone-like model where the company can tightly integrate hardware and software but still provide a relatively open platform. The company has previously delivered conflicting reports of its OS strategy but is predicted to be downplaying Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile, and may even stop using at least one of these operating systems within the next two to three years.
