REAL Studio 2010 R1 improves ActiveX support, adds languages

updated 10:30 pm EST, Tue February 9, 2010

Software previously titled REALbasic

REAL Software has released an update to its development utility, Studio 2010. The software was previously known as REALbasic, although the programming language name remains unchanged. Release 1 adds several new features and improvements, including additional support for ActiveX. Previous versions only offered a limited subset of ActiveX controls, while the latest release is claimed to support most of the controls and all events.

Along with the additional support, the software is also now available with a localization for Korean customers. The company has changed its product documentation to a wiki format, enabling quicker updates to the support content.

REAL Studio 2010 is now available for Mac, Windows and Linux systems, with three different editions to choose from. The Personal version carries a price of $100 and offers most of the basic tools for developers. The Professional edition, which costs $300, adds support for ServerSocket Class, SSL, cross-compiled applications, and other features. The Enterprise variant can be purchased for $995 and offers a profiler, IDE scripting, build automation, and cross-platform development, among other capabilities.

    Good job

Active-x will guarantee IE only web pages on Windows. Good job.

    Good job, bad comment

It seems, you don't have an idea about what the article is talking about... ActiveX is not just about web pages.

    Good comment

Go ahead and show us a site using Active-x that works with Safari in all its glory.

Dude you are missing the point, what he is saying is that ActiveX is not just about web pages.

It is actually a core piece of technology for windows itself that allows software to integrate together.

Studio 2010 supporting ActiveX can have nothing to do with web pages.

    Capitve X

Active X is also the major reason why Windows users gather virii and malware from visiting sites using IE.

Letting software run via your browser outside of the browser sandbox is tantamount to going to every site, downloading and installing any software they want you to.

Don't even get me started on Real. In a world of open-source, free, cross platform software tools, they come out with 3 versions, charge you for SqlLite, buggy connection to MySQL, and the whole thing is based on an ecosystem of plugins you have to BUY in order to add functionality that is available on each platform for free or nearly free.... and no plans to add iPhone support.

You're better off using your HTML5/CSS/JavaScript/PHP skills and going with something like Titanium Appcellerator or some of its close competitors.

    Welcome to the internet, Real.

    Dude your missing more

Active-x is also a big part of the web/IE/Windows. It only helps perpetuate the IE/Windows monopoly. Duh.

    re: Dude your missing more

all ActiveX amounts to is a marketing name for a COM component in Windows that allows a piece of software to interface with other software for functionality, data sharing, communication or automation and control.

I could probably explain it in more detail here but why bother, half the people on this site are flippin' morons who have no grasp of the technology anyway... they see a buzzword and go nuts. Its pathetic really.

Now if you don't mind I'm giong to go back to using my windows machines and my mac cause I like features of both operating systems.
