Nexus One sales just 80,000 in one month

Google flagship just a fraction of Droid, iPhone

New Nexus One is still struggling to muster a fraction of the sales of not just the iPhone but the Motorola Droid. Research from the mobile analytic group estimates that about 80,000 of the HTC-made Android phones have sold since going on sale in early January. The rate is essentially flat compared to the 20,000 sold on launch and suggests steady interest but no acceleration.

Flurry by contrast estimates that about 525,000 Droids sold through Verizon in a similar timeframe late last year. Apple has never said how many of the original 2007 iPhone it sold in the first month, but it recorded 1 million sales in about 76 days; about a quarter of these were sold during the launch weekend.

The analysts don't speculate as to the exact reasons for the slow uptake, though most attribute it simply to the limited reach of Google's initial launch plan. It so far only lets customers buy the Nexus One through its website and currently only subsidizes the phone through T-Mobile, which has just a fraction of the customers of AT&T or Verizon. The Nexus One is available unlocked but costs $530 at this price and only supports T-Mobile's native 3G bands, limiting its utility inside the US.

Google has also made virtually no effort to market the phone and has often only advertised it through a text link on its search page and through text-based ads.

Sales are likely to get a boost in the spring, when Nexus One models for Verizon, Vodafone and possibly AT&T should be ready.

    Verizon Droid

    I took a look at the Droid at my local Verizon. It's slick interface and it has 5 megapixel camera. But it can't do the finger "picture zoom in" type of things. Also interface is a bit complicated once you start digging deep inside and it's not that user friendly. The biggest turn off is it has no iTunes and it can't sync with iTunes account. Droid may do well for those who don't care about iTunes.

    Nexus One

    Had a user apply update last night, the unit is now hosed, went to the support forum and there are hundreds of people complaining about the same thing. Basically, will no longer access email (non Google, I'll bet gmail is just fine) or browse the net....

    The Nexus One is just one of a bunch of

    Android smartphones. All of them will have similar capabilities and every month there'll be a slightly better model. No one Android phone is likely to stand out from the others unless there is some massive advertising campaign. Still, overall Android smartphone sales will continue to climb and gain in market share. That's all that matters to Google. More phones to get advertising revenue from.

    Maybe there terms of service also a factor

    Google wants to charge an additional $300 to cancel your service early. Most people find cancelation fees way to high already. This is just plain blackmail to make you keep your Google phone until your contract is up. It's Ridiculous!

    Face it google your phone is just not an iPhone competitor. You should have thought better about support too. It's one thing to put a product out on the market, it's another to keep it there with great customer service. Google has none from what I've read, not a good way to keep your customers happy.

    its T-Mob and no advertising

    The big problem is T-Mob...T-Mob has the smallest user base to pull from and IMHO most people aren't really willing to switch to them just for a phone. Sprint had the same exact issue with the Palm Pre/Pixi.

    The second problem is lack of "real" advertising. Yes the Nexus One was highly talked about among the techie crowd but that's a very small percentage of total smartphone users. The Droid campaign was huge, so unless you didn't watch TV you knew about it. Even my wife was curious what this "Droid" was when it was first advertised. We're both on AT&T since I wanted an iPhone (wife has a BB Bold 9000), but she even stopped at the VZW store at the mall to check out what the hubbub was about. Nexus One has none of this "Buzz" and you can't go to a store to even see one, until it sells at retail it'll never sell to more than the tech nerd crowd:)

    There is also the retail factor

    there are also all of the first time smartphone buyers who have no idea that google is selling a phone online. they would probably sell a lot more if they actually had models to display and purchase in tmobile stores

    No big deal here

    Unlike the iphone where many customers switched their carrier to ATT, I bet the majority of 'droid' sales were to Verizon customers who did not want to leave the Verizon network but wanted an 'iPhone' like experience.
