O2, owned by Spain's Telefonica, has sold over 2 million iPhones in the UK, according to Reuters. The carrier says it is pleased with the performance, and attributes the sales to being closely linked with the iPhone in the minds of UK shoppers. "It will take a long time before that goes away," adds O2 UK CEO Ronan Dunne, referring to one-time exclusivity and the entrance of Orange and Vodafone into the UK iPhone market.
O2 claims to have done well in general during 2009; Dunne further proposes that once trading results are released in the near future, O2 will likely be the only UK carrier to have shown growth last year. Part of this is because of high customer retention, which comes in spite of the carrier having regular trouble with its data network, especially in London. Extra revenue help is said to have come from healthy Palm Pre sales, though exact numbers remain unknown.

That's 4% of the UK population, let alone mobile customer base. Not bad going for a device that would be lucky to get 1% of the market.
(Interestingly, only one person at my highly technically literate workplace has one - it's all Nokia and HTC. My g/f wants one as both her friends keep going on about their latest apps and feels left out).
