TiVo HD runs out of stock ahead of Premiere

updated 07:25 pm EST, Wed February 3, 2010

TiVo may be clearing DVR stock for new model

TiVo today sent signals that it's ready to introduce new DVRs by listing the TiVo HD as out of stock. The move leaves just the high-capacity TiVo HD XL as the company's only real option and doesn't come along with an explanation. It comes not long after TiVo unintentionally leaked the TiVo Premiere and hinted at a seemingly imminent upgrade.

Product drops have occasionally been a sign that TiVo is either introducing a new model or refocusing its efforts on fewer devices, such as when it phased out the Series 3 to concentrate on the less expensive and sometimes better TiVo HD and HD XL. The Premiere would chiefly let TiVo offer multi-show HD recording without needing separate CableCARDs, as it does with the current hardware. [via CrunchGear]

"The Premiere would chiefly let TiVo offer multi-show HD recording without needing separate CableCARDs, as it does with the current hardware"

TiVo HD models currently support M-Stream cable cards.

The primary focus of the "Premiere" is reduced costs (the unit is physically smaller, a few outputs have been removed), and possibly updated internals (using a new chip that is a step up from the current Broadcom chips in current TiVo HDs).
