Gateway FX, DX and SX get overhauls

Gateway on Wednesday has refreshed its desktops to use Intel's current wave of desktop chips. Most of its attention is centered on a new FX6831 series gaming tower: the new model has a new minimal, more upscale case that provides a handy top peripheral tray with USB and card slots. Modernization is just as significant underneath as the new model always comes with a 2.8GHz Core i7, a Radeon HD 5850 for graphics and 1.5TB of disk space.

A base FX in the new range costs $1,300 for a version with 8GB of RAM; a premium version with 16GB of RAM is priced at $1,700.

Other changes to desktops are less cosmetically obvious and instead focus on hardware. The mid-range DX4831 series now scales from a 2.93GHz Core i3 dual-core processor to a quad-core 2.66GHz Core i5. Graphics range from just Intel integrated video up through low-end NVIDIA GeForce graphics and ATI's Radeon HD 5750, and systems carry either 6GB or 8GB of RAM as well as 1TB of disk space. Prices start at $560 for the base PC.

The SX2840 finishes the updates and caters to those wanting slim designs, though its performance is as high as for the entry DX; it costs $560 and brings a 2.93GHz Core i3, 6GB of RAM and 1TB to the line.

All of the new PCs should be available in stores today.

    If you're going to...

If you're going to buy an ugly a** PC Alienware knockoff, you might as well build it yourself and not buy it from Gateway of all places.
