iPad for Verizon still on track?

updated 02:45 pm EST, Mon February 1, 2010

Talks for VZ iPad said still underway

Despite its absence at Apple's event last week, a Verizon-ready iPad is still under discussion, an alleged source at the carrier says. The tip to Fox News' Clayton Morris, who made the previous assertion, insists that an agreement should be reached in the near term. No explanation has been given, however, for the supposedly stalled talks.

The prior rumor had claimed that Apple was in rushed talks with AT&T and Verizon less than a week before what became the iPad event; it's implied that no deal was reached in time for the press gathering. So far, Apple has only said it plans to offer 3G versions of the iPad through AT&T, though unlike with the iPhone it made no mention of an exclusive and may only be limited by internal hardware.

A Verizon model if it exists at all may depend heavily on Verizon's network plans. Apple has dismissed CDMA as "dead" but could use Verizon's fledgling LTE 4G network when it goes live later in 2010. It also hasn't explicitly downplayed EVDO and theoretically has the choice of a dual-mode 3G chipset that could support both AT&T and Verizon.

    Not Until 4G Proliferates

Ain't gonna happen until Verizon has a substantial 4G network, if then.

    Not hard to imagine

Even with CDMA being a dead end, Apple seems to be set up for different production lines in terms of this device, so whatever radio send/receiver Verizon ends up using, I could see Apple incorporating it without much effort.
Perhaps VZW will break with their hard and fast mantra and let someone else dictate hardware specs for a change. Can anyone guess the likelihood of that?

EVDO is also a dead end, because it is not going up be upgraded. I mean VZW's map ads are cute but what they don't advertise is that, not only is that their whole network, but it will not be upgraded in speed, EVDO is dead, 4G/LTE is the next step and will only have a few months to compete with att's 21 mbps 3G before att also goes LTE in any serious amount of coverage %. I say next year apple goes sprint vzw att, and wait till tmob goes LTE before expanding to them, for both iPhone & iPad.

    Re: EVDO

Yeah, that's what everyone says. Except they also make it sound like switching to 4G/LTE is a 6 month task, when you just have to look how long it has taken ATT to get its 3G network to the limited coverage it is at now.

If you all are planning on switching to LTE next year, you are seriously dreaming...
