Zune phone with Tegra to unveil at MWC?

updated 08:25 pm EST, Mon February 1, 2010

Rumor corroborates earlier analyst reports

Microsoft is allegedly set to unveil the "Zune Phone" later this month at the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, according to the Spanish blog MuyComputer. The company has reportedly teamed with Nvidia to develop and launch the device, which is based on the Tegra platform. The handset will pair Windows Mobile 7 with Zune software for media management.

Detailed specs are unclear, although the phone is claimed to offer a 480x272 pixel display and HDMI output. If true, the display resolution would match Microsoft's Zune HD media player which is also based on Tegra components. Weight is listed as 70g, which is 4g lighter than the Zune HD and almost half the weight of an iPhone.

A recent analyst report suggested a "Zune-like phone" is on its way, with a launch set for MWC or the CTIA spring event in March. Microsoft's direct involvement in launching a device, however, would appear to run counter to the company's previous strategy of unbiased marketing with its various hardware partners.

The Zune Phone reports remain unconfirmed, although MuyComputer claims the launch is "100% confirmed." [via Gizmodo]

I would think there are less and less

consumers looking for a smartphone from Microsoft since everyone that left Windows Mobile seems to be running to the Android platform. I'd still think WinMo would be wanted by IT management in corporations. I doubt if the Zune phone would sell any better than the Zune HD unless there was some sort of quantum leap in the WinMo OS. And again Microsoft could be seen as s******* its WinMo partners with a flagship device.

    Gaming device.

Now this is where Microsoft could actually get it right and make this a strong gaming platform and integrate it with the 360.

"lighter than the Zune HD and almost half the weight of an iPhone."

That makes sense—50% of it is made of Microsoft vapor, and isn't that weightless?

    Ah, yes...

Another "me too but with a Microsoft logo on it" product from those innovators in Redmond.
