New cases announced from three manufacturers

Fast on the heels of Apple's iPad launch come new accessories from Griffin, Belkin and TOM BIHN. Griffin has announced the Elan Passport, a folio case that offers full wrap-around protection and a microsuede lining to protect the iPad surfaces. The folio is held shut by a stretch band and its inner cover has card pockets. The Elan Sleeve is a synthetic leather shell case that the iPad slips into. It has a microsuede interior for protection, and a tab closure to keep the iPad secure. Both Elan cases will cost $50.

Griffin's FlexGrip is a silicone case that protects the sides and rear of the iPad while offering full access to the dock, audio jack and controls. It will arrive in blue, purple, white and black colors for $30. The fourth case is the Jumper, a neoprene sleeve offering full surface protection and a price of $30. All of Griffin's new cases will ship in Spring 2010.

Belkin has announced three new cases and an overlay screen protector. The Vue Sleeve for iPad is a neoprene case with embossed designs and a see-through pocket for extra items. It will ship in Spring 2010 in black/white or plum/violet colors for $40. The Max Sleeve is a pleated Neoprene design that collapses easily when not in use and has a reinforced panel for extra iPad protection. It will ship for $40 in the Spring. The Grip Sleeve is an iPad sleeve featuring a combination of neoprene and etched silicone with a reinforced panel for extra protection. It ships in the spring for $30. The screen protector will be available around the same time for $20.

TOM BIHN has launched the Cache for the iPad, a padded, fold-around sleeve with a brushed tricot interior. The sleeve is designed for added protection within another bag. It will ship for $30 after the iPad becomes available. The Ristretto for iPad is a vertical messenger bag with brushed nylon surfaces and a built-in interior compartment with foam protection. It is available now in black/steel, black/wasabi, cocoa/olive, olive/cayenne and plum/wasabi colors for $110.

    corny and insufficient

Apple set a pretty good standard by unveiling a carrying case that also folds into a display/typing stand. Any third-party manufacturer that doesn't at least provide the same is wasting time and money.
