Razer puts out dual-surface mousepad, Xbox peripherals

updated 06:25 pm EST, Wed January 27, 2010

Razer Vespula, Onza and Chimera available

Razer today launched a high-performance mousepad that caps off a series of launches this month. The Vespula is Razer's latest dual-sided surface and has textures that alternately provide more speed or more control, whether for gamers or pros with high-accuracy mice. Regardless of the side, a gel-filled wrist rest provides a more comfortable position for longer-term use.

The Vespula should be available worldwide today for about $35.

Earlier in the month, Razer also signaled its intent to get into console gaming peripherals. The Onza will be its first game controller and should improve on the Xbox 360's original design with faster-response buttons, an assignable multi-role button and adjustable tension on the analog sticks. It's awaiting official approval as an accessory but should ship for $50 when ready.

The Chimera in turn will replace the stock headset for many and will supply virtual 5.1 surround audio through over-ear cups as well as a collapsible boom mic. In a unique twist meant for LAN parties, its voice system can be daisy-chained to create a private channel just between a small group of players. These too are pending approval but will cost about $130.

Lastly, Razer has committed to developing a motion-sensing controller for computers with the help of Sixense. The product is still in its very early stages but would register six axes of movement. An SDK is already available for Windows users through Valve's Steam storefront, but a ship date is still far away.
