2 million units expected to be sold in the US
Analysts have already begun adjusting their predictions and impressions regarding Apple's new iPad tablet, with the research group IDC anticipating worldwide sales of four million units this year. The group believes Apple may sell two million iPads just in the US market this year, with sales accelerating as the device gains momentum in the near future.
IDC praises Apple for its overall strategy with the iPad, especially the decision to base the device on the iPhone platform. The move should allow developers to easily bring their iPhone apps onto the iPad, or create apps optimized for the tablet-size interface. The new device could also prove attractive to print media companies, many of which have recently announced projects to bring magazine and newspaper content onto tablets.
"Media companies in particular should view the iPad as not just another distribution channel, but as a key channel to engage with the apps developers who have churned out 140,000+ apps driving 3+ billion downloads over the iPhone in the past 18 months," the IDC report reads.
Although Apple's use of its own A4 processor has raised questions, the decision is believed to have been based on considerations for battery performance and costs. IDC claims the display, using LCD-based IPS technology, may not offer the same level of outdoor performance as the Kindle's E Ink display. Overall, the form factor is considered "truly portable," with a 1/2-inch thickness and weight of just 1.5 pounds.
Despite the rumors pointing to Verizon as a potential data partner for the iPad, Apple has instead followed the iPhone path by selecting AT&T for 3G service. IDC analysts, however, view this choice as the potential "Achilles heel" of the iPad's entry strategy, considering the wide range of reports critical of AT&T's 3G service with the iPhone.
On the other hand, at $15/month for 250MB and $30/month for unlimited data, the service is much cheaper than establishing mobile broadband on a notebook. Customers are also able to enroll in service without a one- or two-year contract.
Initial buyers are expected to be mostly early adopters and Apple enthusiasts, although the App Store efforts, which helped boost iPhone sales, could also become a driving force for the iPad.
"The iPad offers the media industry the opportunity to leverage Apple' hallmark design aesthetic and customer experience, enormous application developer community, and a range of connectivity options to propel their businesses into the new decade," the IDC analysts conclude.

I'm Absolutely and Completely Sold!
I can't see why people would buy the iPod Touch? Yet, there are still more iPod Touch users than iPhone users, so WTF? You either buy a 64GB iPod Touch for $399 or a 64GB iPad for $699 or $829 with 3G + Wi-Fi that AT&T is offering a NO CONTRACT Unlimited Data Plan for $30 a month and Access to ALL AT&T Wi-Fi Spots! Plus iPad has 802.11n! I do see high sale numbers because some of those iPod Touch user are going to trade up and get a iPad. This will have high sales in summer for school and high on Christmas sales. I say 5 Million iPads sold. I like James Cameron's Avatar but I didn't think it would gross over $1.85 Billion Dollars worldwide either. I love a challenge and I like to see this beat the c*** out of Microsoft's Tablet Editions and Amazon Kindles. I'm sold!
